Choice cards

1. Choice cards can be used when a child is expressing a behavior that is unexpected. Instead of telling them what they should be doing and then getting angry, you give them a choice. Giving students a choice give them some power that allows them to calm down and focus on what the task is.

2. Choice cards can be given as a reward. A student who does an excellent job can be given a choice card for something that they would want to do. For example, 10 minutes of computer time or 10 minutes extra recess.

I find choice cards to be very efficient in the classroom. Students love the freedom of having a choice and not feeling like they only have one option and that's it.

  1. Lindsay, do you use choice cards in your classroom? Using choice cards lets the student feel like they have the power which can make them feel important. When I was a student, I would have loved having choice cards.
