1. Break cards can be used differently for each students. Break cards can be given in the middle of a lesson so the student can get some time to get a break and come back fresh. This is often given to students who normally can't make it through a lesson and will have a breakdown.
2. Break cards can be given at the end of the lesson to students who worked very hard and did an excellent job. They can be used as a rewards for positive reinforcement.
They can be given out as often or as rare as the teacher thinks is necessary. I have seem these used very effectively in the classroom and will use them in my classroom.
Lindsay, I agree that break cards are a wonderful tool to use for kids who cannot typically make it through a lesson. I prefer that they be used as a positive reinforcement. My son's current kindergarten teacher uses them and I find it to be very helpful especially in the younger years. Have you ever considered using them?
